Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day

We have a ... I suppose you could call it a tradition, though that is not the right word ... here where whenever a Canadian soldier is killed, he or she is given a motorcade down the Highway of Heroes. People line the overpasses to show their respect and to welcome our dead home. While I hate the necessity, I love the practice, and it makes me proud of my home and my people that we care enough to do so.

My Grandfather was a member of the Canadian Legion (an organization to support troops and veterans and their families), because he was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces in WWII. He was honourably discharged before seeing action, because he lied about his age when he enlisted, and they found out before he was deployed into Europe. My husband is technically a vet though he also did not see action (that he admits to).

I was waiting on an overpass near a Legion hall, musing about the dwindling number of people involved in the organization when the motorcade approached and I suddenly realised that the ranks of veterans who have seen the horrors of war are growing, not dwindling. This thought was reinforced recently when I was in Florida and I saw several US servicemen, amputees, wounded, and on leave.

For me, Remembrance Day has always been about the veterans of all wars, no matter when they took place. But this year, it is also about the veterans in the making in Afghanistan and other posts. I wish health and happiness and a good day, and I wish you to know that you have my support and my thanks, but far more than that, I wish you SAFE.

I am thinking of all of you.

August Update

Don't you all just love how I say "August Update", like I've secretly been updating all along?

Yeah. I suck.

So - Friday, I should be quitting my job.

This, naturally enough, is pretty scary. I'm doing it so that I will spend the time I should be spending on building my two companies, but in doing so I'm giving up a regular paycheque and my safety net.

But you know - I look at the folks who are my age, who a few short years ago were at the same level work wise as I was. Those people are now a job grade or more ahead of me, and I don't really understand why that is. Sure, they're good people, but not *better*.

Of course, what it boils down to is : those people either took opportunities that presented themselves, OR made their own opportunities.

Well, hell. I can do that.

It may be scary, but that's no reason to not do it, right?

Wish me luck!

Meme

For the writers and readers out there...

List five of your favourite stories (if you write, ones you've written, if you read, ones you've read. After the link, add a comment about what you learned from the story.

Somnio Cruento (Supernatural)
Summary: The crossroads demon is haunting Dean's dreams and driving him into acts of violence and worse things. Every time he closes his eyes, she's there, waiting...

What did I learn? This taught me that a story can eat your brain. Seriously. I was obsessed - really obsessed - for weeks.

Thanks for the Memories (Stargate Atlantis / QAF Crossover)

Summary: Two parallel storylines (then and now) reveal Brian's inspiration for the man he became, while John learns of McKay's chequered past by watching his unexpectedly hot present.

What did I learn? Apparently I know way more about the details of BSDM than I knew... to the point that I've been told this story is pretty hardcore. It's also slash. Ultimately I learned two things - sometimes to get your smutgroove back you need to try something that intimidates you, and HOT transcends gender identity.

Being 494 (Dark Angel)

Summary: The story of how Ben stole 494's life, before he became Alec.

What did I learn?Stories can come from the smallest, tiniest point of idea.. and turn into something fucking fantastic.

The Mission Series - Shelf Life (Dark Angel)

Summary: The transgenics come with an expiry date, and it's killing them all on and around their thirtieth birthday. 529 is next on the list.

What did I learn? If you stick with it, the story can be completed. Even two years later. Also - sometimes your characters outgrow the storyline and take on new characteristics. I never really expected the sudden Rhys/Max subtext - but I almost killed Alec off just so I could explore it.

I wrote down several others and then deleted them again, wrote down then deleted. Ultimately, I've decided to leave #5 blank for two reasons ... I gave up fanfic two or three times, but here I am, still writing it. So .. maybe - I've learned from that. What I've learned - take your inspiration where you can find it. It's a gift, not a right, and there's no guarantee you'll find it anywhere else.

Second - well. I need room for the favourites I haven't written yet, don't I?

A post, NOT about Obama.

Though I am pleased he won.

I try and stay out of American politics for all sorts of reasons. This particular election, I was watching. Not only because there was *nothing else on*, but also because I happened to catch a news story yesterday that discussed the ballot amendments. Despite the good of the result of the presidential election, the results of the ballots are ... disappointing? Frustrating?

How about, heartbreaking.

Most of the ballots even I didn't care about, at least not with any fervour. But let's look at the ones I do:

Arizona
Ban on Gay Marriage --> Yes (56%)
Another opportunity for progress derailed.

Arkansas
Ban on Gay Couples Adopting Children --> Yes (57%)
This one? Translates into people being unable to help their families, or each other in times of crisis, as well as the straightforward implication that people's ability to parent is linked to their genitals.

Florida
Ban on Gay Marriage --> Yes (62%)
I don't even know what to say anymore.

Colorado
Human Life from Moment of Conception --> [CORRECTION - NO] (73%!!)
Oh, this is brilliant. This ballot has writes into law that as of the instant of fertilization, human life qualifies as a 'person'. This has the obvious effect of banning abortion, but also implies: use of the morning after pill is attempted murder; early miscarriage through carelessness or ignorance could be manslaughter or murder, and so on. Even in cases where termination of pregnancy would previously have been all right even in abortion banned states, such as an ectopic, intervention would now be considered murder. Oh, well done Colorado!
[CORRECTION -- this one was a NO! Thank all the little daisies there is some sense out there.]

California
Ban on Gay Marriage --> Yes (52%)
I think this is the one that hurts the most. California ... I expect you to be progressive. Now, the votes here haven't been all counted yet, and there are still enough outstanding to provide the possibility that Amendment 8 will be rejected. I still have hope.

What does it take for the general populace to understand that this isn't about 'gay' rights, or 'women's rights. It's about HUMAN RIGHTS, and I find it unfathomable that there is still argument about whether all people qualify.

I have never been so happy to be Canadian as I am today.

And we go burling down and down white water...

Hadn't realised it was so very long since I'd posted. Here, that is. I've actually been writing so the other journal's been fairly busy. Go me!

Last week I had a trip to St. Andrews on the Sea, New Brunswick, for work. I flew out Friday night before Hurricane Kyle roared through, so I had excellent beautiful weather the entire three days. One day of travel, one of meetings, and one of boat trip (whale watching woo hoo!) and puttering around Saint John in the car that only I was insightful enough to rent. It was gorgeous. The thing that surprised me most about the New Brunswick coast was how very very much it is like the Great Lakes northern coastlines. Other than the tides, virtually indistinguishable. I totally felt like I was at home.

While there, I developed a lovely little condition called BPPV - Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, which is an incredibly wordy way of saying "Don't move. Spinning will eat you." Essentially, little crystals form in the fluid of the inner ear, and then bang around against ear walls and each other as your position changes. It is unbelievably annoying, with the world spinning and the nausea and loss of balance, and did I mention that it causes your eyeballs to twitch back and forth and affects vision? So unpleasant, but utterly safe. Made the plane ride an adventure (I am SURE planes don't actually go into flat spins spontaneously - or at least that other people would *notice* if it did), but surprisingly little trouble driving. Spent Sunday in the hospital ensuring that it was nothing serious, but all is well. And, now, it's gone away --- woo hoo!

That's my net news. Cheers All.

Fic: Assuage [SPN] (NC-17)

Title: Assuage
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating: NC-17
Spoilers: Season 3
Warnings: Torture.
Wordcount: ~1200
Disclaimer: Seriously?
Summary: Ruby needs Dean sane, and takes steps to be certain he can withstand the agonies of Hell.
Notes: Written for kink_bingo, bondage (immobility). Crossposted to NWP.

Dean had thought he understood pain, in all its physical forms.

He'd been punched, kicked, stabbed, shot, slashed, bashed, crushed, and more. He'd been electrocuted, had almost drowned, had his internal organs smushed by remote control thanks to telekinetic opponents. He'd been kicked in the nuts by a really motivated woman. Pain? Definitely something he knew about, in detail.

Of course, that had been mortal pain.

This? This was something entirely different. Something new.

And holy FUCK it hurt.

Agony razored down every single nerve fibre, riccocheting around his body in a dance of excruciation. The heavy metal of the hooks pulled mercilessly at the muscle and bone where they pierced, and Dean could feel the gaping holes in his flesh. About the only thought he was able to keep in his head was Sam, alone and unprotected. It was probably part of the whole endless torture thing, that all he could picture (between screaming in agony and sobbing) was Sam facing down Lilith and losing. The worst part was knowing that this was ultimately all pain of the mind; that he couldn't escape it through healing, through unconsciousness or death. There was nowhere to go and no way to make it stop.

Which was why the sudden cessation came as such a shock.

Dean gasped, chest heaving as he fought to get himself under control. He could still feel the hooks and the rents torn in his flesh, could feel the cauldron of pain bubbling just outside his ability to reach, and he fervently wanted it to stay that way.

"Look who made it to Hell after all."

Dean closed his eyes and groaned. "Ruby."

"In the flesh." She laughed bitterly. "So to speak."

"What..." He swallowed convulsively. "What do you want, bitch?"

"I want Sam to win." She answered him flatly, angrily even. "For that I need him sane. For that, I need you sane."

"Yeah, well." Dean thought of the agonies awaiting him just out of reach. He opened his eyes to see her staring down at him, eyes black as coal pits and sweat beading her brow. "Good luck with that."

Her lips compressed. "I can't hold it back much longer. What I can do," she blinked and her eyes flicked back to their human blue. "Is give you something else to think about."

He laughed, hating the thread of hysteria in his own voice. "Good luck with that too," he managed to choke out.

"Oh, for that I won't need luck." Her lips spread slowly over even white teeth, and she licked them until they glistened. Her lashes swept down, and the pain roared through the barrier to crash back into every molecule.

Dean screamed, his throat tearing under the pressure.

Slowly, so slowly, he became aware of a single point of heat and wetness against his neck. It was soft and hot and most miraculously of all, it didn't hurt. Instead, a tiny thread of pleasure wormed its way into his mind. It was enough to let him catch his breath, to let him regain control of his voice and choke back the terrible noises. His chest heaved. Desperately he focused on that one small spot, bending every ounce of energy he could muster on it, shutting out everything else.

The point moved. He almost sobbed as his attention wavered before he could amend his concentration. Now he could make out the variations in pressure and texture that meant, mouth, that meant, sucking. He could feel the deliberate flick of tongue against skin.

He knew it was the demon. Yeah, Ruby, that bitch, that fucking spawn of Satan. But as long as she kept doing that, kept giving him something else to think about, he was fucked if he could bring himself to care.

A second sensation joined the first, tracing with exquisite slowness across the expanse of his chest. A hand, his mind provided helpfully. It slid carefully over his skin, avoiding the hooks and the biggest holes, path lubricated by his own blood. It paused over his nipple, tweaking just so, and Dean couldn't help it - he tried to move, tried to get more.

Agony exploded through him, wrenching loose another scream before the pressure of the mouth on his neck tightened into an all out bite, regaining his attention. He panted desperately, relaxing into immobility. The mouth returned to nips and sucks in reward, and Dean managed a shuddering breath.

Right. No more moving.

The hand resolved itself into separate fingers, rubbing deliberately over his nipple and sending little bolts of pleasure through his chest like flashes of lightning against the storm of constant pain. Another hand joined in, tracing the muscles of his ribs and heading steadily downward. Dean's stomach contracted as it glided through the soft hair of his abdomen.

The mouth lifted from his neck, and the pain rolled back into its place, threatening to overwhelm. He heard Ruby's voice whisper in his ear, "We have nothing but time, Dean. Concentrate," before it returned. Hot wet heat on his collarbone gave him focus and he gasped in relief. Distantly, he thought he heard her laugh.

Ruby's mouth slid down his chest, following the same path as her hands had. Her tongue lingered over his nipples, and he had a sudden flash of her licking the blood from his skin. Sharp teeth nipped him in retaliation (though he noticed she didn't deny it) before heading further south. She made long laps over the muscles of his abdomen, scraping her teeth over the ridges there.

Both hands and her mouth arrived at his groin at the same time.

Pain? What pain?

Dean was locked into utter immobility as her mouth closed over the head of his cock. He wasn't fully hard until he felt that velvety heat engulf him, but the sheer pleasure of the touch had the pain all but disappearing in his head. Slowly she began to move, keeping the agonies of Hell at bay with her talented mouth.

He struggled hard to stay still, to not thrust up into her hands. Even knowing what would happen if he did, still he shook with the desire to move. She dug her fingers into his hips, kneading with easy rhythm. White heat began building at the base of his spine, familiar static starting to fill his ears. Dean closed his eyes even tighter, the sensation twisting around his gut until it finally roared free and he exploded.

He brought his breathing back under control with effort, opening his eyes to see Ruby staring down at him with a strangely uneasy expression on her face. He swallowed hard, feeling the wave of the agonies of hell already threatening to break back over him. His chest heaved, and he found himself totally unable to speak, except one word - his brother's name. Ruby's face softened.

The wave broke.

Dean screamed.

Ruby's eyes flashed black, and she bent her head to start again.

I'm still a couple of fics away from Dark Angel. How about that.

The really ironic part? The latest 14 have all be written since I was finished with fanfic.
FanExpo - Sat. Aug 23

After the EPIC FAIL that was yesterday, the trip into Toronto today went quite smoothly. I accidentally turned onto the wrong street (that will be the right street tomorrow) but turned around and even found parking without a big deal. One small asthma attack (damned steps) later, I was heading in to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

FanExpo is a huge event, and there were thousands of people there today. A very good proportion were in costume, and not just the usual costumes either. Since FanExpo includes the AnimeCon, there were a *lot* of fascinating interpretations of manga; the HorrorCon brought out some really incredible bloodworks, SciFi of course contributed BSG, Stargate, Star Wars, and the occasional Star Trek. There was a 7 foot Chewbacca, and some of the most creative costumes I've seen, ever.

No lineup for me for registration, AND I still got my swag bag! Awesome! We headed in to the dealer floor first.

The place was *packed*. MTCC has a large, large dealer floor, and it was wall to wall people. Insane. The first event that we really wanted to see was the talk with Dr. Buzz Aldrin, and we got there late enough that there wasn't a lot of time before his talk. So, we did a quick wander around, enough to see some absolutely incredible leatherwork, before we headed out. On the way out the door, I almost ran over a blonde lady in a pretty green dress, sidestep ok, took another two steps and realised - holy shit! That's Kate Hewlett! And she looks awesome, by the way. A little tired around the eyes, but gorgeous. But .. but... Buzz ALDRIN! So, I decided to keep my eyes open later and headed for the Q&A.

I have to say, the organization of almost everything was great, *except starting the events on time*. O.M.G. The usual start was fifteen to twenty minutes late, and they cut the stars off with about ten minutes left, every single time. SO annoying. But! The stars themselves were fantastic.

SO! Dr. Aldrin. It was amazing, seeing in person a man who has walked on the moon; amazing enough that everyone seemed to be struck a bit dumb. He filled in the blanks by telling about how he got into the space program and his background, and then he discussed his feelings on the importance of space exploration, and where he thinks that the folks in charge are going right and going wrong. He's very passionate about the topic, and I wish he could have spoken longer. Unfortuately they set up the autograph sessions immediately after the talks (though better than right before as happened last year).

Then we went to get Peter David's autograph. As we headed in the quieter door, we stopped at the TCON booth, and found Kate Hewlett signing photographs, and Aaron Douglas! How awesome is that!! Aaron was signing autographs and soliciting donations (for photographs with him) for charity. His hair is growing back and he looks awesome. Some friends of Kate's had just come by so Ash and I got our pictures with Aaron and headed down to Peter David's signings.

Now - neither of us had anything for him to sign, so I waited in line while Ash went on a comic hunt. A half hour or more later, I shrug and go up and asked him to sign my programme. We talked a little about how hard his book series are to get in stores up here, and how it's so much easier to be an author at one of these events than to be an artist, cause the fans make the artists draw the whole time.

I liked him. :)

Then, back to Kate. She was very friendly and talkative; I picked the same picture as goblie had signed at Meet the Hewletts. I told her how unhappy I am at SGA's cancellation, and she agreed. Apparently not many fans know, and she'd been breaking the news to them all day. :( We kind of exchanged grouches about how it had seemed so certain for season 6, especially after the comments at ComicCon. We shook hands and it was on to Michael Rosenbaum! At which point I realised no picture of Kate - I'll keep my eyes open tomorrow too.

Michael R and Laura V did a joint Q&A, and they plainly really enjoy each other's company. Michael has hair, and it looks great on him, and Laura looked beautiful. More importantly, they were both in great spirits and a little giddy, and were hilarious.

For someone who I am so uninterested in his character, I have to say Michael is an incredible Q&A guest. He has *such* a great time with it and has so much energy that it just picks up the whole room. I unfortunately forgot my pen & paper so I don't remember the questions beyond whether the inflatable sheep exploded, but it was a lot of fun. The Q&A started twenty minutes late and was stopped with 15 minutes left to go, but at least this time it was for a good cause - Laura sponsored a small charity auction for North York General's NICU. We left just as a fellow dressed as Hermes (winged boots, pointed ears, and a speedo) paid 2 thousand for Tom Welling's red Clark Kent jacket. Fun!

We headed upstairs to Henry Winkler's Q&A, and he was an absolute hoot as well. He started off discussing his qualifications and what he's done. It was very motivationally flavoured, but he relaxed and started joking with the audience pretty easily. His was probably the Q&A with the most questions, ranging all across his career from Happy Days (Jokes on set, how did Fonz get his ehhhhhh, Ron Howard, Robin Williams) to Arrested Development (how did that happen), next plans (heading to england), and his children's books. He's a really good speaker, knowing how to keep the room going, and he used his time really well.

The day ended with a sketch-off, and it was another fantastic experience for us. Everyone involved was a little punchy, so it became a set of five minute sketch challenges, while answering questions from the crowd and telling anecdotes. This session was the most like just hanging out, with the crowd talking to each other, a great moderator, and lots of bantering with the artists as well as with the crowd and each other. Such fun! And the stories about Stan Lee, Peter David, and other folks as well as the bitchtalking were just hilarious.

Then dinner, then home.

Tomorrow - Brent Spiner, Edward James Olmos, and a four way sketch off! Looking forward to it.

Pet Peeve Meme

Simple meme -- answer the questions, pass it on or pick it up.

1. What is your biggest personal pet peeve?

Public bathrooms. I *hate* public bathrooms. More to the point, I hate *sharing* a bathroom with someone else at the exact same time I am in there. I hate it even more when there is no music or other muffling noise. Cause then everyone just... sits there. In absolute silence. Waiting for someone else to make a noise. It's like a graveyard only with fewer dead people and more silence. *shudder*

2. What is your biggest societal pet peeve?

Stupid people.

I'm not kidding. Ask goblie. Stupid people are it.

3. What is your biggest pet peeve about women?

I hate that for many women personal politics and backstabbing are a way of life. I don't understand that mode of living.

4. What is your biggest pet peeve about men?

Huh. *Thinks*. That strip clubs, hookers, and golf are seen as valid mechanisms for business sales, I guess. Really it boils down to so many of them (though not all) using sexualization as a segregation tactic in business. That is really infuriating. I don't understand that mode of living either.

5. What is your biggest pet peeve about children?

That so many people believe I should give up MY opportunities to learn in favour of them. Why did I lose my right to press my nose to the window at the aquarium when I turned 13? I hate the way people push their kids ahead of me at the Science Centre or the ROM, or anywhere else for that matter. Kids are people too - AND SO AM I, DAMN IT!

6. What is your biggest work pet peeve?

Getting overruled when I'm right. That pisses me RIGHT off.

7. What is your biggest fandom pet peeve?

Right now I have 2.
A. Cancellations of shows with actual promise, or shows that are actually successful while absolute SHIT like 'Ghost Whisperer' stays on the air. (I'm looking at YOU, FOX. Also YOU, SCI-FI. You bastards.)

B. People in fandom who seem to feel that by the act of playing a character they know the actor/writer/producer/whoever, and who turn this into the extreme. Also people who DO know the actor/writer/producer/whoever and feel it means they are the voice of the gods.

8. What is your biggest TV inaccuracy pet peeve?

When tv shows assert that metallic tattoos will get hot and cause excruciating pain in an MRI. (Totally NOT TRUE!!)

9. What is your biggest transportation / driving pet peeve?

People who tell me to take public transportation because THEY don't need to drive, and then try to prove to me that public transportation is adequate by using their own situation as their baseline for proof.

10. What is your biggest meme-related pet peeve?
Memes that demand you tag others. Makes it simultaneously a popularity contest and a joiner activity - two things that drive me nuts enough in real life to want to avoid it online.

Wow. See? Now I feel like I've gotten a week's worth of rants off my chest! Awesome.

This fic's been on the back burner for about two months, written for kink_bingo's "sensory deprivation (touch)" prompt.
Meme and Me

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.

B) Tag eight people to do this quiz and those who are tagged cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by and cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by. Continue this game by sending it to other people.
[Inf] Yeah, uh. No. However, anyone who wants to post answers, have fun.

I was tagged by the incomparable goblie

1. How are you so awesome?
I'm not.

2. What do you do before bedtime?
Everything subsequent to getting up.
(Evidently feeling pedantic today... .)

3. What would you do with a million dollars?
Pay off the house, pay for the renovations, set aside half of what's left into investments, and then learn how to fly helicopters and go back to university for as many degrees as I can afford.

4. What is the city of your dreams and why?
At the moment, Atlantis. Controlling stuff with your BRAIN.

5. Are you an introvert or extrovert?
Both. I actually split the difference - when I do personality tests I score on an individual question basis extremely introverted or extremely extroverted. For example, on a scale of 1 to 20, with 10 questions, 5 questions will be 1s and 5 questions will be 10s. Split personality, anyone? Anyhow, there you have it.

6. What are five things that have made you happy lately?

In no particular order:

1. Chocolate ice cream.
2. Sleeping in.
3. Reviews.
4. Alone time.
5. Mini Inf's alien costume.

7. Do you trust easily?
No. In fact, for the most part, I don't trust.

8. What is your earliest memory?
I remember getting a leech on my toe when I was about 18 months old. I also remember running in a field and falling on some metal, cutting up my knee. Which happened first is anyone's guess.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
Yes. Mostly my own head, screwing with me.

10. What is your best quality?
I'm a genius. (Worst quality, apparently, is that I know it.)

11. If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Pizza. Cause I could always ask for different toppings.

12. Where are you in 5 years?
In 2013.

13. Do you have any weird talents?
I can stand on the outboard engines of a boat going 80 mph while getting video of other boats and a) not fall off and b) have steady video.
I can also convince almost anyone of almost anything given enough time in a row.

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
Now she? Is Awesome.

15. Would you rather be single and rich or married but poor?
I don't think those two things are related. I've never cared about marriage one way or the other - it doesn't equal happiness or even necessarily good things. Same thing with money. Still - you can definitely say that it is easier to accomplish things with money than without (which you can't necessarily say about marriage since I have negative desire for a green card) so I'll say single and rich.

16. Name a food that you absolutely hate.
Tomato. Also, eggplant.

17. What's better, to give or to receive?
Give.

18. What is your oldest userpic and why has it survived when you deleted others?
Dean's beating the Impala. It has survived because I use it for being irritated or cranky, and I feel that way a lot.

19. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes. I also believe in lasting love.

20. What were your parents going to name you if you'd been born the opposite sex?
Michael.
I was almost 'Esmerelda'. Still haven't really decided if that would have been a bad thing or not.

Fanhistory Outs Fans Personal Information

FOr those folks who don't know, FanHistory is a wiki that contains lots of information about various fandoms and the people active in them. It has lists of fanfiction writers, description of fandoms, cross referenced information, etc. Much of it has been generated through simple bot actions (ie - running through all of the information on fanfiction.net to generate Biography, story, fandom, etc information for a writer. It has also been generated through people searching places like livejournal and related sites, doing in effect investigative work to link different usernames together into a single entitity (like, for example, Infie=infiticus=skinscript). Overall, a good thought that would actually be nice for folks to build self esteem and promote fandom.

But they went too far.

Several people have been listed with their *real life names* on the site, as well as real life contact information. I surfed it briefly - the links between my online personas haven't been made as yet, but following a couple of links led me to at least two author posts with real life information on them. For a while, the site was refusing to remove this information, and in at least one case, actually compounded the issue by posting a writer's private information onto an LJ community as well. (see references) Right this moment, the site has been locked down and the adminstrator "is working to delete all of the people" who have demanded it. But it took several days to get there. I haven't gone back to actually look at the timeline, but the history here of refusing to remove private information is unforgiveable, whether it was ultimately addressed or not. The fact that ultimately the site is intended for moneymaking makes it all worse.

It got me thinking.

What privacy are we ultimately entitled to? In my own personal case, I have always been a proponent of never being ashamed of any part of my life, but that doesn't necessarily extend to wanting people in my day to day life to be reading explicit sex I've written. I know this was exactly the kind of thing that has led others to leave fandom behind entirely. I'm wondering if they aren't right.

The thing that bothers me even more is the argument that was made - that if someone has revealed their true life name at some point during their fandom, that makes it OK to post it publicly for the rest of the world to see.

Fact is, there are tens of people who know who I really am, thanks to Nunswithpens, conventions, and chatting etc. I'm not hard to find for someone who tries hard enough. BUT I EXPECT TO BE ASKED. There is a process of trust building online that over time brings me to tell someone my name or my address. The simple fact of owning an internet-capable device does not give someone that trust, and I am totally offended that there is anyone out there who equates the years of time I've put into *knowing my flist* with being available to anyone.

That the site owner refused to take down someone's private information when asked is inexcusable. That she seems to feel (heresay) that all of this behaviour is acceptable in the face of getting publicity is even worse.

The more I think about it the angrier I get.

Thoughts welcome.

Some references:
http://dejana.livejournal.com/152580.html
http://ithiliana.livejournal.com/922604.html

Both of these posts have additional resources listed.

ETA: FanHistory posts apology and describes actions to address issue. Text can be found HERE. Thanks to slwatson for the update, and to nestra for posting the text.

Fannish Five - June 20

Name 5 characters you didn't like at first, but eventually learned to love.

Well, now... I'm usually pretty consistent in who I hate. More often a character will start out ok and then will slowly grow OFF me (like Logan (DA)). So this might take some thinking.

1. Saul Tigh, Battlestar Galactica
2. D'Anna, Battlestar Galactica
3. Krycek, X-Files
4. Amanda, Highlander
5. Worth, Cube

Fannish Five - June 13

Happy Friday the 13th!

What are the five most outrageous misuses of science in science fiction?

1. Armageddon. Like, all of it. (still fun to watch, though)
2. SGA, "Adrift", when they blow up the asteroid at the base of the tower... and there is NO DAMAGE. In vaccuum. *shakes head*
3. AHA! Independence Day; the computer virus. Just... DUDE.
4. Warp Speed. (Aside - nevertheless, I *love* warp speed.)
5. How they always make explosions in space have noise.

Fun with Synaesthesia

I'm a mild synaesthene. Which is rocking cool and much more entertaining than being a dermatograph, though less noticeable all in all.

What it means (if anyone doesn't already know) is that I experience certain things with senses that usually don't have involvement in <whatever>. For example, words have taste to me. Not taste as in actual physical drool-inducing taste, so not like a hallucination, but instead in a very visceral, fundamental way that it is extremely difficult to describe. I've always liked Russian because it *tastes good* when I speak it. It's especially applicable for me with names, and it is related to the way things are spelled. The smallest change in spelling (and in the way my tongue moves when I pronounce a word) can completely change the taste.

Neil, for example, tastes kind of icky. Unpleasant when I say it. But Niall (which sounds pretty much indistinguishable) actually is pretty tasty. The word "orientate" is so unpleasant for me to say that I refuse to acknowledge it as an actual word. "Corollary" is tolerable only when pronounced "core-all-ary"... people who pronounce it "coral-airy" in my hearing are taking their lives in their hands.

Other neat things are - people / personalities in my brain have distinct weights and densities that have nothing at all to do with their physical attributes. People also have distinct colours if I take the time to think about it. Strangely, their colours do not match their weights. Like - I know at least one yellow who is a very dense personality, and I would have thought a dark colour for that.

So, yeah. weird, and all.

So - why mention this randomly now?

Well - last week, I was driving my little girl to school, and I had the radio going, and our conversation went something like this:

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"This song?"

"Yes?"

"What colour is it?"

"..." *thinks* "Can you repeat that?"

"What colour is this song?"

*Thinks some more* "You know, it sounds orange to me. What do you think?"

"I think it's yellow." She went back to her book. Since then we've discussed the colour of all sorts of songs.

Now... How freaking COOL is that??
